Bextra Arthritis Drug Recalled

In 2005, the Bextra arthritis drug was pulled off the market due to an increase in heart disease. It was the second drug of its kind to come off the market in two years (Vioxx was recalled in 2004) because the safety of these drugs just hadn't been studied long enough before being approved.

Unfortunately, it's all too familiar of a scenario. The drug companies push their products through the testing phase, they hide any potentially damaging evidence, they pay off lawmakers to get them approved, then they market them heavily to physicians. Unaware of the risks, the doctors prescribe them to you and me and then several years later the meds are pulled off the market.

NSAID's (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are the most commonly used medication for arthritis pain. They often cause stomach upset, though, and a severe and potentially fatal side effect of them is bleeding in the stomach or intestines. They are also associated with a higher risk of ulcers.

The osteoarthritis drugs Bextra and Vioxx were a class of medications known as COX-2 inhibitors, and they gave arthritis sufferers pain relief without the harmful stomach side effects. When they hit market, they seemed like the ideal solution to arthritis pain.

Until people started dying.
